listen to the song referenced in this post here
the song Mommy Issues by Jules Paymer reminds me of Neil soooo much
like it's as if it's him talking about how his relationship with Andrew is helping. and I know Andrew literally tells him in canon "I am not your answer, and you sure as fuck aren't mine" but I do think they're helping each other heal and they both know this, even if subconsciously
like look at some of the lyrics:
It's just the way that I was raised
Never let down my guard
I need someone to take
Take me in and take charge
Now you got me playing house
Sunday morning on your couch
And you're all I talk about
I don't recognize myself
and
My baggage never felt this light
My damage never felt so good
And for the first time I don't mind
I had a fucked up childhood
I'm really trying to recover
But don't wanna heal too soon
Cause the second I get over it
Then I'm not under you
and
I'm fucked in the head that's what my therapist says
But I've been feeling so much better sleeping here in your bed
With every kiss I feel a little less sick
Can I stay a little longer 'til I'm finally fixed?
You got me so close
I'm 'boutta breakthrough
I know we both know
It's just an excuse
You're helping me cope
I'm helping you too
We're working on those
Mommy issues
the "I need someone to take / Take me in and take charge" lyric reminds me a lot of how Neil's constantly thinking about how Andrew holds him up and lets him lean on him for protection. and the "And for the first time I don't mind / I had a fucked up childhood" lyric reminds me of when Neil realizes that Andrew is the type of person who would hear about his past and not react in any particular way, and especially not negatively, which is what Neil needs
also I think we can all agree that Neil has a shitload of mommy issues because of Mary. it just fits him
note from Mar 24th, 2026:
original post had the lyrics in screenshots, not written out. i changed it for here to make it easier to read
