one of my favorite lines in the king's men is the scene where lola first burns neils face with the lighter because of the way nora phrased it.

"Agony exploded in his face, knifing down his jaw to his throat and eating its way through his eye. The smell of charred skin only made the blinding pain worse and Neil couldn't hold his ground in front of it. Heat ate a fierce line through his other cheek as he retreated right into Lola's waiting knife. He felt it like a distant memory, an insignificant tickle against the inferno."

like i love how she describes the burning as "knifing down his jaw" and then contrasts it with the knife cut being described as "heat ate a fierce line through his other cheek" because its so cool how she flips the comparisons. youd expect that the burn would be described with heat and the cut described as knifing but its the opposite and thats so so clever. i love it so much. fave quote despite the fact hes literally getting tortured
