all for the game backlog post: Dan and Matt befriending Andrew
orignally posted on tumblr here on Nov 21st, 2025
concept (that ignores the extra content):
dan and matt try to impress upon neil that dates are beneficial to a relationship no matter how steady and solid the relationship is because taking time to dedicate set-aside parts of your day to focus on each other and not just in a sexual way is important because it helps with communication and gives you time together doing things you typically wouldnt do if you just went about your usual daily routine (im a big believer in casual dates just doing things or going places that you normally wouldnt, i think quality time is super important to any relationship, romantic or otherwise, and trying new things helps add to it as well. i know the ec says they dont ever go on dates, but while i can see them not doing traditional dates, i can also see them counting things they do that are particularly out of their routine as a date when they feel like calling it that. they dont always decide its a date, but my point is not every date is cookie-cutter stereotypical, and a date can look however you want it to)
and neil knows andrew isnt interested in that kind of stuff and assumes he wouldnt go for it, but they bring it up enough that hes eventually like "FINE. ill talk to him. no guarantees"
andrew has to think on it but eventually he tells neil they can try it but that one of the dates has to be a double date with dan and matt (neil is like "isnt that beside the point of a date? i thought the point is time alone with your partner?" but andrew explains some people will do double dates with friends, and he knows dan and matt are neils friends)
when dan and matt ask why, he tells them "you need to learn to live with the consequences of your own actions" and proceeds to try to make it the worst double date theyve ever been on as revenge for putting neil on to the idea of dates (because as much as he ends up enjoying the one-on-one dates and the fact that neil seems to like them too, it forced him to reflect on his feelings and relationship with neil some more and he hates when that happens)
neil finds it hilarious, matt is mostly amused instead of annoyed though there are a few moments where hes just like wtf andrew really?, and dan is losing her mind her mind a little, but despite that, she and matt are actually having the time of their lives because holy shit andrew is actually taking the time to do SOMETHING with them even if its him being a little shit, and trying to keep up with his bullshit is keeping them on their toes. im not sure what the date would be, but andrew tries his hardest to make it unpleasant as hell for dan and matt
the revenge backfires on andrew because like a month later they ask if he and neil want to go on another double date and neil had too much fun last time that andrew doesnt want to say no. they go paintballing and andrew is Bad At It (neil has to carry their team and they still win but barely because matt has been paintballing before and is pretty good at it. dan is just as bad at it as andrew because neither of them have been before. neil hasnt either but hes handled a gun plenty of times, he just has to adjust to the differences between a paintball gun and the guns he and his mom would use on the run. they count the winners as whos covered in the least amount of paint by the end of their time so they can keep playing after they get hit since their teams are so small, and he and matt are pretty neck-and-neck because of him having to adjust, but neil just barely gets them the win)
anyway this is how dan and matt accidentally get andrew to befriend them and its mostly his own fault for trying to make them suffer because it backfired so hard that it made them want to spend time with him more often
