heres a random thing i thought up and cant shake:

what if dennis started calling dee a bird when they were younger cos he wanted to cheer her up after a particularly bad comment from their mom, because he thinks birds are cool! yeah hes killed a few but that was out of curiosity and they obviously werent the best birds anyway cos he was able to easily kill them. dee is one of the better birds!

but its dennis and he doesnt understand feelings and as a result struggles to understand how to compliment people and when he tries it comes out wrong. so dee thinks its an insult and to make matters worse, barbara overhears and laughs

she turns his attempt at complimenting dee into an insult and praises him for it, further shoving the twins apart. and over the years dennis just kept it up cos he didnt know how to fix the situation, and now its consistency that he needs in his life

mac is bossy, charlie is dirty, dee is a bird. thats just how it goes in his mind
