it's always sunny in philadelphia backlog post: thoughts on the episode Hero Or Hate Crime

this is super late to the party but what really gets me about Hero Or Hate Crime is when the gang is telling Mac to just go back in the closet now that he's got his money since he's gonna do it anyway. everyone talks about how Mac lights up when he chooses to stay out or how the gang is genuinely happy for him, but that's not what gets me. it's the brief pause, where Mac is deciding, where you can't really tell if he's hurt by what they're saying or not

rcg fucking nailed that scene, imo, because it reminded me of all the times I was pressured to stay closeted in a situation even after coming out, or all the times I was told that it was just a phase or that my mind will change anyway

what makes Hero Or Hate Crime so great is not that the gang has always been supportive of Mac and just waiting for him to be ready, but the fact that Mac can't see that, for good reason if their first instinct is to tell him to go back in the closet, and he chooses to stay out anyway

it's so empowering and really drives the point home that he's finally ok with this part of himself and it makes me tear up every time even though the rest of the episode is so fucking ridiculous
